Episode 22 – Morals in Stories

Back when we recorded this episode, Saving the Game had just turned one year old! That’s pretty awesome! A big thanks to all of our listeners, old and new.

In this episode, Grant, Peter, and Branden discuss morality in storytelling: How to effectively tell stories with moral lessons without pontificating, without insulting the other players at the table, and without taking away player agency. Peter also references an episode of Extra Credits“Beyond Fun” (S5E8).

Scripture for this episode: Micah 6:8

Welcome to the new Saving the Game site!

Saving the Game has switched to Podbean for our web hosting—they’re specifically designed for podcasts and as such, require much less maintenance. Unfortunately, that also means we have a bit less control over things like RSS feeds and core Wordpress settings, so a few things have changed.

First, our RSS feed is now at http://savingthegame.podbean.com/feed.  This is also going to be our ‘default’ feed for podcast aggregators like RPGPodcasts.com, which means blog posts and the like will creep in. This is probably the biggest inconvenience for longtime listeners, and we apologize—we’d have kept our feed URL the same if we cou […]

Episode 21 – Redemption Stories

This time our episode topic is redemption stories in your roleplaying games. We discuss how to successfully tell redemption stories in a collaborative storytelling environment; how these stories differ for protagonists and antagonists; redemption stories for player characters and NPCs; and how to get Branden and Peter to argue. Also, Peter’s bookseller rage activates!

Episode 19 – Sloth (Virtues & Vices, Part 5)

We’re back with Part 5 of our Virtues & Vices series! First, Grant talks about finding a church again, and some other news. Then we delve deep into one of the Seven Deadly Sins: Sloth. What is it? Why is it more than just laziness? Why is it dangerous, and how does it commonly manifest? And how can we use it in game, and deal with it at the table?

Episode 18 – Problem Players

Grant, Peter, and Branden take on a listener question about problem players! First, Grant talks about finding a church, and Branden talks about moving. Then we dive into Scripture and our topic, which comes to us via a listener question: “Could you guys maybe do talk about how to deal with “that guy” and what the Bible says about those situations?” We can indeed! We talk about various categories of “problem” players, how to deal with those problem players at your table, and how to avoid being a problem player yourself. Enjoy!

Episode 17 – Lines and Veils

It’s only Grant and Peter for this episode, but that’s not stopping us from handling an important topic: Lines and veils! We explain the concept and its history; talk about some common examples of “trigger warning” material; weigh player transgressions of these lines and veils against GM transgressions; and discuss how to implement them in your game. We also hit on a few other intermediate points.

Scripture: Proverbs 22:3Philippians 4:8

Episode 15 – Faith and Science Fiction (with Ben Rome)

Grant, Peter and Branden are joined by Ben H. Rome, Catalyst Game Labs’s Assistant Line Developer for Battletech and co-author (with FTB’s Chris Hussey) of the forthcoming book Games’ Most Wanted. We talk about the curious lack of religion in science fiction; integrating faith into sci-fi games and stories; how sci-fi tropes might affect Christianity and other faiths; and a whole lot more! This episode was so long we had to split it into two parts; stay tuned for Part 2.

Episode 14 – Temperance (Virtues & Vices, Part 4)

Grant, Peter, and Branden continue our Virtues & Vices series with a look at Temperance! We talk over the usual news, and thank those who’ve commented on past episodes (that’s always nice.) Then we dive into our Temperance discussion: How it’s commonly used in Scripture; its prevalence as a virtue in many moral codes; how Christians treat it, and contrast it with Gluttony; and as usual, how to use Temperance in-game and how to promote it out-of-game.

Scripture: Proverbs 25:16Ecclesiastes 10:16-171 Corinthians 9:24-27
